johnreid2.jpgJohn Reid is a Senior Lecturer in the Fenner School of Environment and Society, College of Science, The Australian National University, Canberra. He also co-ordinates the Environment Studio and convenes the Field Studies program for the ANU School of Art.

As a visual artist John Reid works with the media of photography, collage and performance to address issues of human rights and to aesthetically visualise landscape as a contribution to the construction of regional identity. He collaborates with journalists to extend his work into the electronic and print mass media. See He is also the CEO of the National Environment Bank. See

He has recently established the National Heritage Trust for Aesthetic Documentation to raise and distribute funds to artists to assist in the production of artwork inspired by places of heritage value. John Reid is an internationally awarded graphic designer and specialises in symbol design.

Main research interests:-

  • Visual Art Research Visual art as a catalyst for social change and for the advancement of human rights (Performance art and collage);
  • as an agent in the construction of cultural identity and sense of regional place (Photography); as a motivating influence in community acceptance of environmental protection strategies (Photography, Oral/Visual narrative).Pedagogic Research in Visual Art Education Action research and inquiry-based learning in interdisciplinary and outreach collaborations
  • (Environment Studio and Field Studies); and the application of digital technologies for supervision of visual art research in remote locations
  • (FieldScreen™ Research Project).
  • Research in Sustainable Natural Resource Management Engagement of cultural practitioners as aesthetic communicators and
  • motivators to assist rural catchment communities to determine desirable future landscapes.
