The township of St.George is located 500 kms west of Brisbane. Situated in southern inland Queensland on the Balonne River the district population is 3,800.

While the summers are hot (34.2 + degrees), winter is cold with crisp clean days (5.5degrees). The winter is predominantly dry and much warmer than experienced in the southern States. St. George and the surrounding region becomes a popular destination for Southern travellers during the winter months. Annual rainfall is 516 mm. The night skies are an astronomers dream.

The leading primary industries in the Shire are Cotton, Sheep/Wool, Grain crops, Wild Game Harvesting, Fruit/Vegetable Production and Beef/Cattle.

Production of cotton, beef and grain have increased whilst wool production has decreased. Successful development of the horticultural industry commenced with table grapes, which represents the second highest earning crop after cotton. In recent years there has been extensive diversification into wine grapes, rock melons, pumpkins and onions.
